The Whole House Calculator was prototyped as an online tool (no longer hosted) to help designers, builders and homeowners understand some of the implications of their decisions about what professionals to involve in the design and planning of their home, what materials to use and what systems to use.
The Whole House Calculator shows an person the recommended practices for their particular zip code, which it uses to account for the differences in climate, natural risks, and geology and their interactions with the materials, systems, and processes used to make the house.
After clicking on a checkbox next to the planned material, process or system, the calculator provides a report card comparing each major component of the house to the recommended practices for that location. It's free to use, and can fill up most of a quiet Friday night.
